Geomechanical Measurements and Machine Learning Help Predict Trouble Stages

April 15, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

The authors use machine-learning methods combined with geomechanical, wellbore-trajectory, and completion data sets to develop models that predict which stages will experience difficulties during completion.

NASA Prepares To Drill for the “Oil of Space”

April 15, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

NASA is undertaking a drilling project on the Moon—the first on any planetary body outside the Earth. The mission’s purpose, collecting subsurface soil and ice samples to search for water beneath the lunar surface, is being compared to collecting core samples on Earth and will use technologies, such as a rotary-percussive drill, that have been adapted from those for hydrocarbon development.

Carbon capture and storage, geomechanics and induced seismic
activity

April 8, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

The paper examines the causes of injection-induced seismicity (IIS), and how it should be monitored and modelled, and thereby mitigated. Many IIS case studies are found where fluids are injected into layers that are in close proximity to crystalline basement rocks. It investigates this issue further by comparing injection and seismicity in two areas where oilfield wastewater is injected in significant volumes: Oklahoma, where fluids are injected into a basal layer, and Saskatchewan, where fluids are injected into a much shallower layer.

Geomechanical Measurements and Machine Learning Help Predict Trouble Stages

April 6, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

The authors use machine-learning methods combined with geomechanical, wellbore-trajectory, and completion data sets to develop models that predict which stages will experience difficulties during completion.

Thermo-Poro-Mechanical Analysis of the Effects of Low-Temperature CO2 Injection on Caprock Integrity

April 6, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

A detailed study to characterize the behaviour of the model and to identify the influence of interactions between fluid flow, heat transfer, and geomechanics in the model. The paper also reviews the results of a series of analyses conducted to evaluate the sensitivity of tensile fracturing potential in the caprock to several different modeling parameters.

Carbon Storage Potential of North American Oil & Gas
Produced Water Injection with Surface Dissolution

April 1, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

This study examines the potential to “piggyback” off the existing wastewater injection industry as a novel carbon storage option.

Thermal Geomechanics with Emphasis on Geothermal Energy

April 1, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

a brief overview of thermal geomechanics and geothermal energy. The papers in the thermal geomechanics category focussed on the fundamental thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical behavior of soil and rock while the papers on the geothermal category emphasized the application of thermal geomechanics in geothermal energy extraction through ground-source heat pumps and energy piles.

GHG Inventory Development Process and Guidance

March 30, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

A greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory is a list of emission sources and the associated emissions quantified using standardized methods. Organizations develop GHG inventories for a variety of reasons, including:

- Managing GHG risks and identifying reduction opportunities
- Participating in voluntary or mandatory GHG programs
- Participating in GHG markets
- Achieving recognition for early voluntary action

Geohazard Risk Reduction Technologies in Geotechnical Engineering

March 29, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

Induced seismicity and the effects on civil engineering systems are not completely understood and infrequently studied. One specific area that is not well known is soil fatigue which includes factors such as understanding the natural conditions of the subsurface as well as operational parameters under short duration impulse loads. With the increase of geoinduced seismic activity, soil fatigue becomes of greater concern to structures in the vicinity of this seismic load. The foundations of these structures can be affected by impulse loads which can ultimately cause failure. The lack of quantitative data puts the reliability of these civil engineering systems at risk as they are not fully evaluated to determine if they are functioning as they are intended in the environments they are designed to support.

Injection wells can induce earthquakes miles away from the well

March 29, 2021 at 6:00:00 a.m.

A study of earthquakes induced by injecting fluids deep underground has revealed surprising patterns, suggesting that current recommendations for hydraulic fracturing, wastewater disposal, and geothermal wells may need to be revised.
